The UUFA is an independant Association representing riparian owners, clubs, associations, organisations and all persons interested in the preservation of Fishing on the River Usk and its Tributaries.
The Officers and Committee represent our members on every official body that governs local legislation and the well being of our beautiful riverine ecology.

Launch of River Usk Fisheries Crimewatch ProjectI am writing to announce the launch of a joint initiative between the Environment Agency Wales (EAW) and The United Usk Fishermen’s Association. The projects aim is to help reduce environmental crime on the River Usk. The project was launched by Graham Hillier, Area Manager for South East Wales (EAW) and Nick Brabner, Chairman of both the UUFA and the Agency’s Usk Local Fisheries Group, at the Usk Show on Saturday 8th September 2007. By supporting this local initiative you will benefit from: A “Crimewatch” sign for your fishery Leaflets for anglers with both project and angling information An invitation to a seminar in the new year – “ Fisheries Protection for Anglers and Fishery Owners” Be invited to take part in a survey on fisheries enforcement on the Usk, a chance for you to put you views forward and for those views to be listened to. Access to the project information line. This line will be an answer-machine service, which will be checked daily. It gives members of the public the opportunity to get any information they think relevant, quickly to enforcement staff. All emergency calls will continue through the Agency’s 0800 80 70 60, manned Regional Control Centre.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the UUFA for supporting this project and point out that the UUFA distributed a similar letter to riparian owners of the River Usk last September as a further endorsement of this initiative. River Usk:
Draining less than one quarter of the catchment size of the Wye, the Usk is a much smaller river and it is only in the lowest section that there is a history of navigation. The difficulties in navigating upriver were overcome with the construction of the Brecon and Monmouth canal linking Brecon and Newport. There is no public right of navigation, save for a small section above Brecon. On both rivers the upper reaches have a characteristically fast "rocky" flow due to the steep gradient. These sections remained a considerable challenge to early paddlers and their wood and canvas craft.... until the development of rugged and maneuverable plastic canoes, kayaks and inflatable rafts. However, technological advances bring downsides as well as benefits and the wherewithal to paddle white waters has led to conflicts with anglers, owners and those who consider canoeing incompatible with wildlife and the wildness and solitude of these places. |
